The Gaze You Wear: Talismanic Jewellery and the Power of Protection

Your brain can register another person’s stare in under 100 milliseconds – long before you consciously turn to meet it. That ancient reflex is the subject of ‘Stare’, the new campaign by Bhavya Ramesh Jewellery, in which actor Tillotama Shome meets the camera with the kind of quiet ferocity that makes jewellery feel less like adornment and more like armour. It is a fitting title for a collection that is less about being seen than about seeing – or rather, being watched over. The campaign’s first look, released alongside the news, shows Shome wearing layered gold pieces against the deep green of Kerala, her expression fixed on the lens.

A Different Kind of Glint

Shot in Kerala’s monsoon-drenched greenery, the campaign introduces a 13-piece collaboration with fashion label NorBlack NorWhite. The collection draws on Indian talismanic symbols – the nazar, the lotus, the trishul – reworked in gold and precious stones. These are not passive charms. They are designed to catch the light, and the eye, acting as a protective presence that follows the wearer through the world.

For centuries, Indian jewellery has functioned as a spiritual skin. A child’s first gold chain, a bride’s mangalsutra, the amulet pinned inside a sari’s pallu – each carries an intention. What makes the talismanic approach so potent is its reciprocity: you wear the piece, but it also watches over you. The evil eye, or nazar, is perhaps the most recognisable example, its blue-and-white concentric circles said to deflect envy and harm. Yet the same logic applies to a finely engraved 18ct gold pendant or a ring set with a deep red garnet – the eye is drawn to the surface, but the protection lies underneath.

Wearing Your Own Gaze

Tillotama Shome’s presence in the campaign is no accident. Her roles often hinge on characters who are underestimated, then reveal an inner steel. That duality is precisely what talismanic jewellery offers: a modest exterior that holds a fierce intention. For the modern collector, this translates into pieces that are personal rather than purely decorative. A gold amulet inscribed with a meaningful symbol, a ring with a hidden engraving, a necklace that sits close to the collarbone like a whispered vow – these choices speak to identity before fashion.

At Gioielleria Patricia Oro, we understand the language of protective jewellery. Our 18ct gold pieces are made to be lived in, gaining a soft patina that records the wearer’s days. Whether you are drawn to the ancient allure of the nazar, the strength of a lion motif, or the quiet symbolism of a single pearl, consider what you want your jewellery to say – and to whom. After all, the most powerful stare is the one you wear around your neck.
