Granulation: Gold Dust Turned into Jewellery

When nineteenth-century explorers forced open the rock-cut tombs of Cerveteri, north of Rome, they found gold that looked as though it had been dusted with pollen. Each earring and fibula was covered in thousands of tiny granules, no bigger than a pinch of semolina, arranged in triangles, rosettes and zigzags.
